BlueBird Power – Charging with Solar Energy Across 2,000 Charging Points

The Dutch start-up BlueBird Power has reached a significant milestone with 2,000 self-managed smart charging points. These charging stations enable households to charge their electric vehicles directly using self-generated solar energy. The continued growth of the network reflects BlueBird Power's ambition to work with energy suppliers and partners to make smarter use of locally generated renewable energy while reducing pressure on the electricity grid.

BlueBird Power's charging stations store solar energy directly in an electric vehicle's battery without first feeding it back into the electricity grid. This reduces reliance on grid electricity while increasing the direct use of locally generated renewable energy. The first users of the system have demonstrated just how effective this approach can be, with vehicles being charged using up to 99% solar energy on sunny days.

Thanks to dynamic phase switching, the charging capacity automatically adjusts to the amount of solar energy available. This allows charging to continue even when solar production fluctuates, ensuring that as much locally generated electricity as possible is used while helping to reduce peak demand on the electricity grid.

Driving Cleanly with Solar Energy

Bart Holthuizen, Director & Head of Product at BlueBird Power, explains:

"Many charging stations and electric vehicles require a minimum charging power of 4.2 kW for three-phase charging. Solar panels often generate less than this, meaning grid electricity is normally used. Our chargers overcome this limitation through smart phase switching, minimising the CO₂ emissions associated with grid electricity. In addition, the chargers are easy to install and automatically support off-peak charging when combined with a dynamic electricity tariff. Our chargers are developed and assembled in the Netherlands. With 2,000 charging points now under our own management, we are moving closer to our goal of working with energy suppliers and partners to use locally generated energy more intelligently and contribute to a more stable and sustainable energy system."
