Bidirectional Charging with a Very Easy-to-Install Dutch EV Charger
Share
The Dutch startup BlueBird Power believes that homeowners are perfectly capable of installing its new EV charger themselves. In practice, however, the company expects that most customers will still choose to have the charger installed by a certified installer.
"Our charger is designed with installation in mind," says BlueBird Power. "We've made it so simple that users can install it themselves. On average, it takes just 12 minutes to mount the charger and connect it to the internet." This estimate does not include modifications to the fuse box or routing the power cable, as these tasks require the most time and technical expertise.
Smart Charging with Solar Energy
What makes the BlueBird charger particularly interesting is that it transforms the home into a smarter energy system. Using the BlueBird app, homeowners can configure charging schedules, set departure times and define the desired battery charge level. Thanks to its minimum charging power of just 1.4 kW, the charger can operate entirely on surplus solar energy. When combined with a dynamic electricity tariff, the charger automatically selects the cheapest times to charge.
Customers can also choose a version that supports bidirectional charging, allowing compatible electric vehicles to supply energy back to the home and effectively function as a home battery. Although only a limited number of EVs currently support this technology, the expectation is that bidirectional charging will become increasingly common in the coming years.
