Direct Charging with Your Own Solar Energy

Direct Charging with Your Own Solar Energy

BlueBird Power has reached the milestone of 2,000 self-managed smart charging points. With these charging stations, households can charge their electric vehicles directly using their own solar energy, without first feeding electricity back into the grid.

According to BlueBird Power, this approach enables homeowners to make better use of locally generated renewable energy, reduce their reliance on grid electricity and help limit peak demand on the electricity network.

Smart Charging Adapts to Solar Production

The charging stations automatically adjust their charging power based on the amount of available solar energy. Thanks to dynamic phase switching, the system can seamlessly switch between charging modes when solar production is limited and automatically increase charging capacity again as more solar energy becomes available.

According to BlueBird Power, this solves a common challenge in the market. Many EV chargers and electric vehicles require a minimum charging power of 4.2 kW for three-phase charging. In practice, solar panels often produce less than this, meaning electricity must still be drawn from the grid. BlueBird Power's intelligent phase-switching technology overcomes this limitation, allowing charging to take place whenever sufficient solar energy is available while also helping to reduce peak demand on the electricity grid.

Bart Holthuizen, Director & Head of Product at BlueBird Power, explains:

"Thanks to the smart phase-switching function, the CO₂ emissions associated with grid electricity are minimised."

Charging During Off-Peak Hours

In addition to charging with solar energy, the system also supports automatic charging during off-peak hours when combined with a dynamic electricity tariff. This gives households greater control over their energy costs while contributing to a more balanced use of the electricity grid.

Developed and Assembled in the Netherlands

BlueBird Power's charging stations are developed, produced and assembled in the Netherlands. With more than 2,000 active charging points, the company continues to work with energy suppliers and installation partners towards a smarter, more stable energy system that makes the best possible use of locally generated renewable energy.
