ERE certificates for electric vehicles: How to earn money with a home charger

Do you drive an electric vehicle and have a charger at home? Since January 1, 2026, charging your car is no longer just an expense, but also a source of income. Thanks to the new ERE scheme for your charge point, you can now earn money in the Netherlands for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) you put into your car.

Previously, only large corporations were eligible for income from emission rights through the HBE scheme. Since the introduction of the new regulations at the beginning of 2026, individuals can now also profit from this market and significantly cut down on mobility costs. In this blog, we explain how the ERE registration of a charge point works, why a MID meter is essential, and how you can get the most out of this scheme with a BlueSky charger.

What are ERE certificates and how do you make money from them with your charge point?

ERE stands for emission reduction units (emissiereductie-eenheden). These are digital certificates that represent the amount of avoided CO₂ emissions. When you charge your electric car using a home charge point, you use electricity instead of fuel. As a result, emissions of polluting greenhouse gases are avoided, which can be converted into ERE certificates. These certificates are subsequently sold to companies that need to compensate for or reduce their emissions. This makes it possible to earn money simply by charging your car.

The annual earnings of EREs for a home charge point

The value of ERE certificates is not fixed but is determined by market supply and demand. Currently, the reimbursement is around €0.10 per charged kWh. Although the exact market price fluctuates, the price calculation for private consumers is very transparent. Specifically, the price is based on the amount of emissions you save compared to a fuel-powered car. For the private market in the Netherlands, calculations are based on the average CO₂ emissions per kWh. The time of charging or the direct source of the electricity (grid power or solar power) does not affect the price of the ERE certificate. Therefore, you receive the same compensation for every charged kWh, regardless of how the electricity was generated.

The average BlueBird Power customer charges about 3,500 kWh per year. With a market-conforming compensation of €0.10 per charged kWh, this amounts to €350 per year in ERE value. This amount comes on top of the substantial cost savings that driving electric already offers compared to a traditional fuel car (see our article on our BlueBird Power Knowledge Centre). It transforms your charge point from a standard utility into a smart investment that pays for itself!

ERE registration with a MID-certified charger

To claim ERE certificates, the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa) imposes strict requirements on the accuracy of your charging data. For EV drivers, the most important requirement is a charge point with a built-in MID meter (Measuring Instruments Directive). This is a European-certified meter that records exactly how many kWh are charged with sufficient precision. This certification is essential to prevent fraud and ensures that the issued ERE certificates accurately correspond to an actual emission reduction.

If you are you using a charge point without a MID-certified meter? If so, the charged kWhs are not eligible for the reimbursement, and no EREs can be claimed with them.

BlueSky chargers and EREs

In terms of hardware, our BlueSky chargers are designed to meet the strictest measurement requirements of the new legislation. Currently, the BlueSky series is undergoing the official certification process at the Dutch Metrology Institute (NMi). This process is expected to be finalized this summer, after which the chargers will be formally certified to provide the required data for ERE registration.

What does this mean for you in practice? By choosing our BlueSky chargers, you opt for hardware that is already fully prepared technically. On top of that, we take care of the entire registration process for you, so you don't have to deal with external brokers or share charging data manually. We ensure you can charge care-free while we automatically manage the redemption of your EREs. As soon as the certification becomes final this summer, your BlueSky charger will be ready for you to immediately start earning from every charged kWh.

Furthermore, it does not stop at hardware alone; our chargers are packed with smart software designed to utilise as much of your own generated solar energy as possible. This delivers a major double win for your wallet: you minimise the usage of expensive grid electricity by using your car as a buffer, and at the same time, you build up a valuable ERE credit. With a BlueSky charger, you are not just investing in a powerful unit, but in an intelligent system that actively and rapidly pays for itself thanks to the ERE scheme.
