Ready to charge with your own solar energy?

Combine your solar panels with smart charging technology and maximize your savings.

Step 1: Buy a 1-phase or 3-phase home charger?

When choosing a home charger, it’s important to know whether you have a 1-phase or 3-phase connection. This depends on two things: your power supply and your electric car.

A charger on a 3-phase connection charges faster than on a 1-phase connection. However, it only makes sense to buy a 3-phase home charger if you also have a 3-phase power supply. If you currently have a 1-phase connection, you can consider upgrading your connection.

You can read how to check your power connection in this article.

Step 2: Pole or wall mounting?

Would you like to buy a charger to mount on your wall at home? That’s easy with our mounting plate, which comes standard with every charger. Prefer a pole installation instead? We also offer several options for that.

For existing mounting poles, BlueBird supplies adapters so you can easily replace your old charger. If you’re not sure which adapter you need, feel free to contact us.

Step 3: Check if you need any accessories

Do you already have a mounting pole for your current home charger? Then simply order an adapter plate. You can attach it to your existing mounting pole — convenient, as you won’t need to buy a new pole, no extra digging is required, and the installation will be faster.

For smart features such as Home Load Balancing and True Solar Optimisation, a P1 dongle for your smart meter is required. You can purchase this online.

Step 4: Installation

Our home charger is designed to be safe, simple, and quick to install—so safe and simple that you can do a large part yourself.

This does not apply to work inside the meter cabinet (consumer unit). Any modifications there may only be carried out by a certified installer—for example adding a new circuit/breaker or changing the main fuse.

The work beyond the meter cabinet—such as pulling a cable to the charger location and mounting the post or wall bracket—can also be outsourced, but with our home charger you can just as easily do this yourself.

All you need is a wire stripper and a screwdriver to open the installation cover. The power cables connect without any extra tools. Inside the charger, it’s clearly indicated which cable goes where. You’ll also find step-by-step instructions in the app.

With this smart design, you save on installation costs and keep the installation under your own control.

Prefer not to install the charger yourself and have an installer do it instead? That’s of course possible. Just send an email to info@bluebirdpower.com, and we can recommend an installer we’ve had good experiences with.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a home charger cost?

A home charger typically costs between €500 and €1200 incl. VAT. Advanced chargers fall on the higher end of this range. We think that’s too expensive. Thanks to our smart design, we’re at the lower end—even though our charger uses premium components and offers the most advanced features.

How much does it cost to install a home charger?

Installing a home charger typically costs between €300 and €1000. It depends on the condition of your fuse box and whether (and how much) digging is required.

Can I get a subsidy to install a home charger?

There is currently no national subsidy available for individuals installing a home charger. However, some municipalities do have local programs or incentives to encourage installation—these might include subsidies or other financial support.

What should I consider when buying a home charger?

Here are the key points:

  • Do you need a 1-phase or 3-phase charger?
  • Will the charger be wall- or pole-mounted?
  • Do you have solar panels? Then get a charger with solar optimisation
  • Choose one that’s easy to install
  • Pick a bidirectional charger if you want to be future-proof
  • Can the charger automatically optimise for dynamic energy rates?

What is the best home charger?

One that meets your needs and isn’t too expensive. Your needs depend on the answers to the questions above.

What do you need for a home charger?

You’ll need three things: a suitable grid connection, a separate circuit in your fuse box, and a power cable running from your fuse box to the location of the charger.

What is bidirectional charging and can your charger do it?

Bidirectional charging means your car can not only be charged but also discharged. This turns your car into a mobile home battery, saving you more money through smart charging. For example, charge your car during the day using solar energy and run your washing machine at night using solar power stored in your car. The BlueSky charger is already prepared for bidirectional charging. Once the technology becomes widely available, your charger will be ready.

How can I charge with my solar panels?

The charger detects when your solar panels are generating power. We do this using a P1 dongle connected to your smart meter. This lets us adjust the charging speed in real time to the amount of solar energy you’re producing—completely automatically, no action needed.
